Omnibus 174 is a 2004 documentary directed by Brazilian directors Felipe Lacerda and José Padilha.This documentary recounts/reinterprets a highly publicized hijacking that took place on July 12th of 2000, near an affluent upper-middle class district called Jardim Botânico, in Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. The perpetrator of the highjacking, Sandro do Nascimento, was a young Brazilian destitute who was raised in the streets after her mother was tragically assassinated when he was only a child, and grew up surrounded violence. As the entire country watched the events unfold in live TV, only one side of the story was told. Brazilians were able to follow and witness how Sandro do Nascimento, armed with a gun and a grenade, took a public bus and its eleven passengers as hostages.The police and swat teams were deployed to deal with an inimaginable situation. Threatened buy seeking attention, Sandro do Nascimento would grab forcefully one his hostages, mostly female passengers, and ask them to draw messages on the interior of the windshield bus. As hours passed, however, Sandro left some of the hostages out, but still had some demands. He set 6:00 pm as the time when he would be executing the first hostage. What the people and authorities didn’t know is that Sandro asked many of the hostages to play along in a fake hijacking. At some point after 6:00 pm, Nascimento fired his weapon, and faked the execution of one of the female hostages. Minutes later, he would exit the bus accompanied by another female hostage, who seconds later would perish in a scuffle between Nascimento and an armed police officer. As the victim laid dying on the ground, Nascimento would be overpowered by the swat team, and moved to a vehicle that would take him to a detention center. The media captured a powerful image of many outraged citizens that had been surrounding the area as the events unfolded. And, as Sandro do Nascimento was taken into custody, a mass of enraged bystanders swarm the vehicle trying to linch him. Do Nascimento wouldn’t make it alive out of the police car. He would die of affixation.
