According to Canole & Swain, Communicative Competence is the ability to interpret and enact social behaviors, where the learner is actively engaged in the use of the target language. It involves:

  • Linguistic competence: knowledge of grammar & vocabulary.
  • Sociolinguistic competence: ability to say the right thing at the right time consistently.
  • Discourse competence: ability to start, maintain, and end a conversation.
  • Strategic competence: ability communicate effectively & correct problems caused by communication breakdowns.
